The Seagate GoFlex external hard drives have an ingenious design with two detachable parts. One part is the hard drive itself protected in a case while the other is the adapter. The interchangeable interface allows you to change to different interfaces by simply swapping the cable or adapter.
This is made possible due to the new Universal Storage Module (USM) standard that the Seagate GoFlex hard drives support. They have been designed to accommodate new technologies. Rather than having to buy a new hard drive with the appropriate interface, you now attach the same hard drive to a new adapter. There are already interfaces for FireWire® 800, USB 3.0 and powered eSATA.
Now there is a GoFlex Thunderbolt adapter. Actually there are two Thunderbolt adapters, one for the portable 2.5 inch drives called the GoFlex Adapter.
The other is for the 3.5 inch desktop external hard drives and is called the GoFlex Desk Thunderbolt Adapter.
The smaller portable version is more compact and is bus powered, so doesn’t require a power adapter. Only drawback as we discovered with the Elgato Thunderbolt external hard drive, is that bus powered Thunderbolt hard drives can only accommodate one Thunderbolt port. Therefore it can only be used as an end device.
Both should hopefully be available sometime soon in 2012.
