LaCie announced earlier this year that they were planning to release a Thunderbolt external hard drive.
Well the LaCie Little Big Disk with Thunderbolt interface is now available with dual Thunderbolt ports to support daisy chaining.
There are three configurations available:
| 1 TB 7200rpm HDD: | 2 x 500 GB 2.5” hard disk drives |
| 2 TB 5400rpm HDD: | 2 x 1 TB 2.5” hard disk drives |
| 240 GB SSD: | 2 x 120 GB SSD drives |
All the drives have been preconfigured as a Striped RAID set (RAID 0) for optimal performance.
The Little Big Disk Thunderbolt hard drive weighs just 1.4 lb as it is targeting the mobile user. Unfortunately it requires external power.
Power is supplied via an external AC adapter that ships with swappable plugs for use in the US, UK, Australia and the EU. It measures 1.6 inches wide x 5.5 inches deep x 3.3 inches height, thus not taking up too much space on your desktop.
To keep it steady there is a small stand in the box that slides onto the bottom of the unit.
2TB Little BigDisk Thunderbolt
The LaCie Little Big Disk’s metal body is ideal for naturally dissipating internal drive heat. Its unique design draws heat away from the internal drives toward the external casing. It is a little noisy though.
Setting up the drive is fairly straight forward, bear in mind though that the Thunderbolt cable is not included with the drive.
The Thunderbolt cables are currently available from Amazon:
Utilising Thunderbolt technology will offer a significant improvement to your transfer speeds, especially if you transfer a lot of large files to your external hard drive. The performance improvement will come at a price though.
Included with the LaCie Little Big Disk is some user friendly backup software from Intego. It has many useful features that are easy to use, such as the ability to select individual files and folders, schedule backups and create a bootable backup of your system.
It also comes with a 3-Year Limited Warranty.
